The Homeland Museum of Knjaževac

THE HOMELAND MUSEUM OF KNJAŽEVAC stores and exhibits valuable cultural heritage of the region of Knjaževac. The museum exhibition in the building constructed in 1906 presents parts of the archaeological, ethnological, cultural-historical and art collections. The museum exhibits from the surroundings of Knjaževac are organized chronologically and thematically with the objective to illustrate life in these parts from prehistory to present days. A special feature is a unique collection of two string knitted socks, exhibited as a special whole called “The Socks Museum” which is part of the permanent exhibition.

How to reach us

The building of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac is located on an elevation, in the vicinity of the old town centre, above the Church of St George and across the High School. One can reach the museum on foot, by bicycle or some other means of transport, There is no parking lot next to the museum, but it is possible to stop a car or a bus for a short period in front of the entrance to the museum.

The nearest organized parking lot is located 350 m from the museum in the town centre, near the Memorial Park, the author of which is a famous architect Bogdan Bogdanović, near the Old Town and the promenade along the bank of the Svrljiški Timok. A shorter stay of cars or buses in front of the museum entrance is also possible.

The Town Museum

 

THE TOWN MUSEUM is located in the house of an important historical figure Aleksa Aca Stanojević, one of the leaders of the Radical Party, a former deputy and President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbia. The house is a cultural monument, built in 1910, and is at Njegoševa 5 Street, with a permanent exhibition which is a reconstruction of a town house interior from the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. The exhibited items and part of the library belonged to Aca Stanojević, whereas a part of the exhibition is a gift from old families from Knjaževac.

How to reach us

The Museum building is located in the town centre, near the Knjaževac Municipality Assembly building, the Post Office and Markov Konak Restaurant. One can reach the Museum building on foot or by a means of transport. Next to the Museum there is an organized and arranged parking lot.

The nearest organized parking lot is 30 m from the museum, in the town centre, opposite the Knjaževac Municipality Assembly building and the Post Office. A shorter stay of cars or buses in front of the museum entrance is also possible.

The Archaeo-ethno park in the village Ravna

 

THE ARCHAEO-ETHNO PARK IN THE VILLAGE RAVNA near Knjaževac represents an open air museum complex. The archaeological part of the park includes a research station with archaeological exhibition, conservation laboratory and dormitory, located in the school building from the beginning of 20th century, the lapidarium with Roman epigraphic monuments from the nearby archaeological site Timacum Minus. A part of the Ethno Park are objects of traditional architecture as typical examples of traditional architecture of the Knjaževac region (residential objects, the barn, a cauldron for brandy…) a facility with a conference hall, a souvenir shop, a café and accommodation rooms and also a pottery workshop with a replica of an ancient and a traditional oven for pottery. In the cellar of the “Big House” from Gornja Kamenica, a Wine Museum has been founded, and the entire complex is a part of the Wine Routes of Serbia.

How to reach us

The Archaeo-Ethno Park in Ravna is located 9 km from Knjaževac, at the entrance to the village. One can reach the Archaeo-Ethno Park on foot, by bicycle or some other means of transport. In case you come by bicycle or another means of transport from Knjaževac in the direction of Zaječar you can use two roads: trunk road 35 and the local road that goes from Knjaževac through the villages of Štipina, Potrkanje and Ravna to Debelica. In case you decide to use the trunk road 35 towards Zaječar, you turn left or right if you are coming from Zaječar at the place marked with sign Timacum Minus and, along a local road, after 2 km you will reach the parking lot in front of the Archaeo-Ethno Park which is on the left side of the road. In case you decide to take the local road via Štipina and Potrkanje, you will enjoy the beauty of the fertile valley of the Beli Timok, go past the Church of the Holy Virgin by Branislav Mitrović in village Štipina or past the Jović Winery, the producer of premium wines in village Potrkanje. Close to the museum there is an organized and arranged parking lot.

Parking lot

The Archaeo-Ethno Park has an organized parking lot next to the museum complex. All passenger vehicles and buses can be parked here. There is also a parking for bicycles in the park complex.

Timacum minus

 

TIMACUM MINUS is the oldest military fortification in the Timok region. The site is situated next to the village of Ravna, on the bank of the Timok River. The fortification and the accompanying settlement date from the 1st century A.D. and were in use until the Justinian’s renewal of the empire in the 6th century. The interior space of the fortification was filled with various buildings (granary – horreum, headquarters building – principia…). The civil settlement (vicus) developed next to the military camp. In the vicinity of the fortification, on the slope of the Slog hill, a big necropolis was discovered with numerous and various findings and grave goods (jewelry, ceramic and glass vessels, coins, etc.) On the bank of the Beli Timok, about a hundred meters away from the fortification, a Roman bath (thermae) was discovered.

Archaeological site Timacum Minus is 8 km away from Knjaževac in front of village Ravna. One can reach Timacum Minus on foot, by bicycle or some other means of transport. In case you come by bicycle or another means of transport from Knjaževac in the direction of Zaječar you can use two roads: trunk road 35 and the local road that goes from Knjaževac through the villages of Štipina, Potrkanje and Ravna to Debelica. In case you decide to use the trunk road 35 towards Zaječar, you turn left or right if you are coming from Zaječar at the place marked with a sign Timacum Minus and, along a local road, after 1.7 km you will reach the archaeological site on the right side of the local road. A macadam road will take you to the site. Near the site there is no organized parking lot, but a short stay is possible near the macadam road.  

In the vicinity of the site there is organized and arranged parking lot in front of the Archaeo-Ethno Park in Ravna.

Programs of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac are free and open to all visitors, except special educational and creative workshops which are part of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac program – Educational Adventures and special tourist offers in the Archaeo – Ethno Park in Ravna.

Accessibility

The Homeland Museum of Knjaževac, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, Balkan Museum Network www.bmuseums.net, Cultural Heritage without Borders Bosnia and Herzegovina www.chwb.org/bih and Stavros Niarchos Foundation www.snf.org realized a number of projects in order to improve the accessibility of the museum.

We purchased mobile assembling ramps which help to, where it is possible, overcome physical barriers, and make the contents of the programs available to persons with disabilities. The yard of the facility in Karadjordjeva 15 has been arranged and in order to facilitate access and moving towards the exhibition spaces, a ramp has been placed in the gallery of the museum in in Karadjordjeva 15 Street.

It is possible to install the assembling ramps in one part of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac in Karadjordjeva 15 and certain facilities in the Archaeo – Ethno Park in Ravna by prior arrangement. The lower floor of the Town Museum in the House of Aca Stanojević will be accessible to persons with disabilities after the opening of the new exhibition.

An application for smart devices has been made – A guide through the museum, which makes it possible to view parts of exhibitions and collections unavailable to persons with limited mobility. In certain locations there are monitors with touchscreens with electronic guides installed and a virtual walk through the museum. There are guides in Braille, a video guide in sign language and audio guide in Serbian and English.

Through the project named "A Mobile Museum – a Museum for All" it is possible to organize a visit of experts from the museum to educational or social care institutions and in that way make the beneficiaries familiar with parts of the rich museum collections. The expert associate services of the museum organize these and other programs for persons with disabilities on request and on the basis of previous consultations.

For visitors with impaired vision there is an audio guide in Serbian and English and a printed guide in Braille, but due to the structure of the space and physical barriers, it is necessary to plan the visits with a companion. It is possible to touch certain items and replicas.

The information boards and texts at the exhibitions of the museum in Karadjordjeva 15 are printed enlarged, and there are magnifying glasses and foils that make the viewing of smaller items easier. There is a number of information boards printed in Braille.

For visitors with impaired hearing there is a video guide in sign language.

For visitors with reduced mobility there are virtual guides on tablets which enable the browsing of the parts of the museum exhibitions inaccessible to persons with reduced mobility. In the objects of the museum in Karadjordjeva 15 and the Archaeo-Ethno Park in Ravna there are mobile assembly ramps which enable access to certain parts of the museum exhibitions.

The gallery of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac in Karadjordjeva 15 has an access ramp and is entirely accessible to people with reduced mobility, and when needed, a smaller mobile ramp is installed in front of the gallery.

In all objects of the museum there are monitors with touchscreens in accessible places which enable the tour of museum exhibitions.

For the Archaeological site Timacum Minus and the Archaeo-Ethno Park in Ravna a special application has been made for Android devices in three languages (Serbian, English and German) which can be downloaded from Google Play Store, and the plan is to place interpretive boards in the three languages (Serbian, English and German), and a part of the information can be obtained by scanning QR codes placed in certain places.
